October Yearling Sale Continues to Rise

The fourth and final day of the 2017 October Yearling Sale maintained the solid momentum observed over the first three sessions, with figures for the day posting strong gains across the board. 82 yearlings sold for a cumulated €1,052,000 (+25%) and despite 19 extra yearlings catalogued, the clearance rate improved from 77% to 85% while the average price remained steady at €12,829.

A broad cross section of trainers and pinhookers, both from France and neighbouring countries, ensured that four horses sold for €40,000 and above while the top price for the corresponding session a year ago was €38,000.

October Yearling Sale marches on

The aggregate for the four-day sale had taken a 23% leap in 2016, and the challenge to follow on this impressive gain was met with brio as the 2017 figure represents a 7% rise. 41 extra horses were sold for a cumulated €20,842,500, representing an improved clearance rate of 80%. The average price remained stable at €41,891.

Rewards for French-based breeders

Being the largest market for French-bred yearlings, the October Yearling Sale represents a key event for French-based breeders, whose efforts to upgrade their stock were rewarded by such positive results. Six individual vendors sold for in excess of €1 million worth of yearlings, a first in the history of the sale. Haras des Capucines led the standings with 22 yearlings grossing €1.8 million whereas Haras de Saint-Pair, which exclusively sells at the October sale, registered the highest average with 6 yearlings averaging €147,083.

Dabirsim leads stallion ranks

The first crop by the former Champion juvenile Dabirsim has lifted 13 winners from 31 runners so far, headed by the Gr.3 Albany Stakes scorer and Gr.1 Cheveley Park runner-up DIFFERENT LEAGUE. The son of Hat Trick, who reintegrated his birthplace Haras de Grandcamp after standing his first two seasons in Germany, proved the star act of the sale, being responsible for the top-priced yearling as well as registering the highest average (with more than 1 yearling sold): his 13 yearlings averaged €109,615.

Trainers, owners and pinhookers make up buying bench

A large number of investors from France and abroad proved active at the October sale, headed by Jean-Claude Rouget who spent over €1 million on 16 horses. Godolphin invested under its own name for the first time at this auction while Lyon-based trainer Marc Pimbonnet completed the podium after spending €688,000 on behalf of his client Fabrice Petit, who started buying horses two years ago.

Eric Hoyeau on October Yearling Sale

Reflecting on the four days of trade, ARQANA President Eric Hoyeau commented: “Above all, I am pleased for our vendors, who work hard to invest in better mares and better nominations: our mission is to help them sell their production at the best market price to continue fuelling their development, especially as nominations and overall costs have been on the up over the past few years. I would also like to thank our buyers, old and new, who travelled from all corners of France and Europe to buy at the October sale. I am thrilled for them as I believe they now have some very good individuals in their hands. Moreover, virtually all yearlings sold are eligible for the 2018 October sale Criterium, which will offer an exciting and valuable opportunity to have a runner on Arc weekend in the brand new Paris Longchamp.”
